Using Summer to Prepare for the Fall Job Search (SmartPros) For those of you left on campus during the summer months, you may be feeling isolated. Many students and professors are on summer break, campus facilities are running on reduced schedules, and the nightlife is a fraction of what it is during the regular school year. During the summer months on campus, finding ways to occupy yourself can be as hard as finding time to relax was during the year. The summer affords students an excellent advantage to prepare for his or her upcoming job search: · Preparing your resume-Update your resume with any activities, leadership positions, internships and/or scholastic achievements applicable from the past school year. This may also be a good time to do some pruning of your resume, removing items that are dated or seem less important. Also, don’t forget to update your GPA, which will have changed with the latest grade reports.· Visit the career center-Summer is a great time to visit the career center. Usually teeming with undergrads and even grads, it will probably be deserted at this time of year. You’ll have the career books, job search databases, and company research information all to yourself. This is also an excellent opportunity to chat one-on-one with a career advisor, as you both will have time to fully discuss your career options. You may want to set up a weekly or monthly meeting to examine progress on the job front.· Meet with professors-Your professors may also have a reduced workload. They are an excellent source of job search information, as many have connections to the private sector in their fields. They may even be able to give you contacts at local companies. You can also use this time to get a well-written, personalized, and above all, positive recommendation from your professors. They will have more time to work on recommendations now that school is out, and will appreciate you contacting them before the fall semester. Many students don’t realize that the hiring season truly begins the first month of school. Career fairs are held in late September and early October, with first interviews following soon after. By using your summer to prepare, you can ensure that you won’t be caught off guard. Good preparation not only impresses potential employers, but will give you piece of mind and keep you a step ahead of your classmates. |
