Visualize Yourself Taking the Exam

(SmartPros) It’s two months before the real CPA exam. It’s the time when CPA exam candidates begin having nightmares about what the real exam will be like. Stop losing sleep over it and go check it out!

[Editor's Note: this article is in reference to the old paper-based exam, not the computer-based exam that is now in use.]

Drive to the examination site. Travel at about the same time of day that you will be traveling to the site for the real exam. Time your trip. Note any special signs about road construction beginning soon or bridges to be destroyed. Note hotels and parking ramps nearby. Think about using mass transit, noting bus or subway stops. Park your car and note the parking charge.

Once you have reached the site, go in. Ask any conference or site location staff if you can actually look at the room where the real exam will take place. If you are given access to the room, note lighting, restroom placement, and flooring. If the floor is cement, consider bringing ear plugs with you as the proctor’s shoes may make distracting noises as they pace around.

Check out the eating areas. Is there a nearby food court or fast food restaurant where it appears that a large crowd of people could easily be served? If the answer is no, then plan to pack your lunch. Time your walk from the food area to the exam site. Note alcoves or areas where a person might be able to sit and study in-between exam sections.

Once you have seen the site, you will be less fearful of the environment. Spend a small amount of time viewing the site, but spend a great deal of time practicing the concepts that you will be required to demonstrate on the exam.
