A Positive Attitude is Key to Success


Oct. 16, 2000 (SmartPros) What makes a job candidate or star employee stand out? While credentials and experience are valuable, there's another quality that is a must-have in today's fast-paced business environment: a positive outlook.



Laugh a little.  Showing a little levity when the heat is on can not only diffuse tension, but it will also promote spirit of camaraderie with coworkers.  The ability to make others feel at ease is an asset in business.

Be a team player.  No one works in a vacuum: You rely on the input and assistance of others to do your job well, and your colleagues and managers depend on you in similar ways.  Honor schedules, deliver quality work and offer your expertise when appropriate to help others succeed.  Your cooperative attitude will be noticed and reciprocated.

Communicate effectively.  Talk regularly with your supervisor about impending deadlines and priorities.  Don't be afraid to ask questions and when you are faced with a difficult situation, avoid letting emotions and deadline pressure get in the way.  Instead, give yourself a moment to take a deep breath and think before you speak.

Although it's not always easy to keep a smile on your face when deadlines loom, a sense of humor and enthusiasm can make all the difference in not only landing a good job, but establishing long-term career success as well.
