Get Motivated
Breaking Through a Creative Block
(SmartPros)
It's not unusual to have a creative block when you're working on a school paper. But what happens when you're feeling uninspired at the office and you're under deadline? Your lack of motivation may be a momentary lapse in initiative brought on by a slower than average workweek, or, conversely, you could be feeling overwhelmed by a rising workload. Whatever the cause, the key is to get back on track.
So how do you get on track? Here are some suggestions:
- Advance your skill set. Continually developing new skills helps you stay challenged in your job. It can also positively impact your career advancement opportunities and long-term compensation.
- Seek new challenges. Volunteer to take on a demanding project, even if it's outside your job description. This will take you out of your comfort zone and enable you to grow professionally. It will also enhance your visibility at work.
- Get moving. Exercise to improve your mental and emotional well being, as well as your physical health. Taking a walk during your lunch hour will boost your energy level and allow you to organize your thoughts more clearly. A change of scenery can work wonders, enabling you to gain a fresh perspective on existing challenges.
- Strive for your personal best. Excel at each project you work on. Success breeds confidence and increases motivation. Your co-workers, in turn, will be confident in your abilities as well.
- Seek feedback. Give each project your best effort, and take pride in your accomplishments. If you feel there are ways you can improve, seek constructive criticism from your supervisors and co-workers.
