Tackling Tough Interview Questions

June 2009 (SmartPros) A job interview can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you're unprepared for questions designed to test your critical-thinking and communication skills.

Following are three commonly asked yet difficult queries — and smart strategies for fielding them with poise and professionalism:

What is your biggest weakness?
Many interviewees respond to this vexing question with a canned answer that turns a positive attribute into a negative one. “I care too much” or “I’m a perfectionist” are classic (and clichéd) responses. A savvier approach is to cite an actual weakness, but immediately follow up with details about the steps you’ve taken to rectify the problem.

For example, you might explain that you used to get nervous in meetings when presenting financial reports to senior management, but that you’re in the process of completing a public-speaking course to conquer your fears. This shows self-awareness, initiative and a commitment to continuous professional development.

Describe the most difficult situation you’ve faced on the job?
The keyword to remember with this question is diplomacy. Bitterly recounting the idiosyncrasies of an “overly demanding manager” or complaining about “catty coworkers” will likely raise concerns about your ability to take direction and get along with colleagues.

Instead, share a story about a situation that highlights your problem-solving skills and resolve. You want to show that you can successfully overcome challenges and maintain a focused, positive attitude in less-than-ideal circumstances.

How do you keep up to date with changes in the payroll field?
Complacent candidates who rest on their laurels are not in great demand in today’s highly competitive job market. Now more than ever, it’s critical for payroll professionals to stay current with industry trends and developments.

Highlight your resourcefulness and passion for your work by noting that you remain ahead of the curve by consistently tapping a multitude of resources. You might mention pursuing advanced credentials, being active in professional associations, attending conferences or training seminars, and reading a wide variety of trade publications.
