Ed Gillespie said on NBC's "Meet the Press" Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, no longer has to split hairs with his Republican opponents and can now focus exclusively on convincing the general public he is the better man for the job.

"In a primary like that inside your party you're trying to magnify minor differences between the candidates," Gillespie said. "There are major differences between President Obama and Governor Romney when it comes to the direction we would go as a nation and the policies that would be put in place."

Gillespie indicated Romney would stick to the conservative script on the economy by touting the benefits of tax cuts for job creators and dialing back regulations on businesses.

"Any time you take from someone by virtue of taxation, there's an erosion of freedom," he said. "Any time you impose excessive regulations, there's an erosion of freedom.

"A more prosperous economy that creates jobs and raises incomes and brings down the cost of gas and electricity will result from policies that free up entrepreneurship in this country," Gillespie added. "Don't stifle it."
